Consultation has concluded

Do you live or work on our coasts? Are you interested in how Canada prepares for and responds to marine spills?

We want to hear your thoughts and ideas on how we can better prepare for and respond to releases of hazardous and noxious substances into the marine environment.

The transportation of hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) by ships is an important part of Canada's international trade. HNS include substances transported in bulk as liquids, liquefied gases, solid materials and materials in packaged form.

Canada has a robust marine safety system to respond to oil spills and prevent marine incidents from happening in the first place. While hazardous and noxious substance releases at sea are extremely rare, they could affect public health and the environment. We are looking at putting in place a more formal approach to prepare for and respond to hazardous and noxious substance releases.

We consider participation and collaboration as essential to the success of the Oceans Protection Plan. Funding to support the participation of Indigenous peoples, local communities, and not-for-profit organizations in the Oceans Protection Plan is available through the Community Participation Funding Program (CPFP). If you require support to participate, please submit your application as soon as possible as costs cannot be incurred before receiving an approval from Transport Canada. For this activity, expenses of up to $1,500.00 for single communities and $5,000.00 for aggregates/organizations representing others are eligible until February 28th, 2019. For questions related to the CPFP or help with the process, please contact the Program at tc.cpfp-pfpc.tc@tc.gc.ca.
